Welcome

Choosing where to study medicine is about more than the course — it’s about where you’ll live, who you’ll meet, and how you will grow as a professional.

At Edinburgh, you’ll join a welcoming and vibrant community in one of the UK’s most iconic student cities. From your first weeks, you’ll build friendships, develop new skills, and start to feel part of the medical profession.

This page brings together everything you need to explore what life here is really like — from student stories and societies to support services and your first-year experience.

If you have any questions about the programme or applying, please email: medug@ed.ac.uk

Introduction to intercalation

Intercalation is an opportunity to take a year out of your medical degree to study a related subject in greater depth. You’ll work towards an additional qualification — often a BSc, BA, or MSc — while developing skills in research, critical thinking, and independent learning.

Intercalation: student stories

For many students, intercalation is a chance to explore a particular interest and gain a broader perspective on medicine — all of which can enrich your future clinical practice and career. Find you what other students have chosen to study in our student stories.
