Each month we profile one of our fantastic postgraduate tutors. July sees the turn of Dr Stuart Irving, consultant Urological Surgeon and longstanding tutor in Stones Disease on the ChM Urology. Stuart Irving - Module lead and longstanding tutor: Stones Disease, 1st year ChM Urology 1. Tell us a bit about your academic background and experience. I qualified in Medicine from the University of St Andrews, Scotland and Manchester University, England. My specialty training was undertaken in the East of England (Norwich and Cambridge) and I was also fortunate to undertake overseas training at both Johns Hopkins (Maryland USA) and Long Island Jewish Hospital (New York USA). I have been an Endourology Consultant in Norwich UK for over 15 years and work as part of a team managing complex stone disease from all over the East of England. Image I undertook a period of Medical Research as part of my MSc at University College London. Following the creation of the PCNL outcomes audit in Norwich many years ago and its subsequent adoption by BAUS, I have become most interested in the outcomes for stone surgery and the factors that affect them. This has been the basis of my research in recent years. 2. Aside from working as one of our tutors, do you hold any other positions? I am an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Norwich Medical School (UEA) where I am an Academic Head of Year. As part of the Executive Team at Norwich Medical School I have been pleased to be part of the team leading the implementation of online learning to Undergraduates. I enjoy translating these skills to the ChM where I have been part of the stone module team for 5 years. I was awarded fellowship of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers (Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh) in 2015 and Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in 2019. I sit on the panel of Examiners for the Intercollegiate Surgical Royal Colleges Membership examination. 3. What do you enjoy most about being a tutor on the ChM Urology? I enjoy distance learning and the teaching format of Edinburgh Surgery Online which facilitates high quality case-based discussion as a platform for learning.
