Monday 12 August - Getting to know yourself as an educator, who are your learners and approaches to teaching and learning

Day one of ESSCE will be an opportunity for you to share and reflect on your thoughts and experiences of approaches to teaching and learning giving some consideration to the needs of your learners, the learning environment, challenges within clinical education and theories of learning. You will be asked to reflect on your role and values as an educator and to relate your teaching practice to theories of learning.

Your Tutors:  Dr Jane Hislop, Veronica Davey and Dr Maia H Forrester

Tuesday 13 August - Designing an interactive teaching activity

In this session you will explore some of the steps taken in designing an interactive teaching activity. You will have the opportunity to put your learning into practice within a group setting.

Your Tutors:  Dr Jess Gurney, Janette Jamieson and Ian Lee

Tuesday 13 August - Introduction to simulation

In the afternoon session you will discuss the role and purpose of simulation-based education within the education of health professionals. You will have the opportunity to plan a simulation scenario and to consider how you would facilitate the scenario and debrief.

Your Tutors: Ian Lee, Agata Dunsmore and Elsbeth Dewhirst

Wednesday 14 August - Assessment

This workshop will involve a practically-oriented overview of student assessment. Through a combination of lectures, group discussion and practice, we will explore some basic principles of assessment (such as choosing the best method of assessment based on what you’re hoping to test), as well as practice question-writing and standard-setting.

Your Tutor:  Dr Stephen Meldrum

Thursday 15 August - Designing and Evaluating Courses

In this session, you will explore the concept of a curriculum and be introduced to various curriculum design approaches. Working in small groups, you will collaboratively design aspects of a course, with facilitators providing guidance throughout the process. The session will then focus on educational evaluation, where you will examine relevant performance indicators for different stakeholders.

Your Tutor: Dr Magdalena Cerbin-Koczorowska

Thursday 15 August - Introduction to Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE)

In the afternoon session you will explore the role of the OSCE as an assessment tool. We will discuss the design of a good OSCE station and the factors you must consider when running an OSCE.  You will work together in small groups to write an OSCE station and then we will run a short mock OSCE with simulated patients using the stations your groups have generated.

Your Tutor:  Dr Janet Skinner, Sylvia Western and Clinical Skills Team

Very inspirational, I’m now hunting the hospital for people to teach stuff to! Really useful to have such a diverse group and to hear the different ways people have incorporated medical education into their careers.
