The way we eat is closely linked to how the brain generates and uses energy. However, we don't yet fully understand whether different types of diet can affect symptoms of bipolar disorder. ENERGISE-BD is a randomised controlled trial (a scientific study where participants are assigned to different groups by chance) that will look at how two different types of diet impact the symptoms of bipolar depression: nutritional ketosis and the NHS EatWell diet.
Learn about our trial, why it is important, and what we hope to achieve.
What is ENERGISE-BD?
Why study the NHS EatWell diet?
The NHS EatWell Diet is the UK's standard healthy eating guidance. It encourages eating plenty of fruit and vegetables, starchy foods like bread, potatoes, and pasta, sources of protein, some dairy, and smaller amount of fats. While it hasn't been specifically researched in people with bipolar disorder, this way of eating may help by supporting weight loss and by reducing intake of highly processed foods and sugary items.
Why study nutritional ketosis?
Nutritional ketosis is a diet that focuses on healthy fats, moderate protein, and very low carbohydrates and sugar. It is a type of eating that helps the body to produce substances called ketones, which the brain can use as an alternative source of energy. Early research suggests that this approach might have benefits for mental health, including bipolar disorder, but more evidence is needed.
Why is this trial important?
The ENERGISE-BD trial is an important step in understanding how nutrition might support mental health. By carefully comparing these two diets in a well-designed study, researchers hope to produce evidence that could improve treatment approaches and public health advice. Ultimately, this could offer new options and hope for people living with bipolar depression.
