Athena SWAN Inspiring People 4 - Wednesday 19th of January 2022The first session of Inspiring People 4 was focused on perceptions, assumptions and their impacts and effects. The session was introduced by Professor Sarah Cunningham Burley and chaired by Professor Stewart Mercer.The speakers for the event included - Dr. Gwenetta Curry, Lecturer of Race, Ethnicity & Health at the Usher Institute, on her experience of being an expert in the media as a woman of colour.Dr. Austin O Carroll, a Dublin based GP, on his journey to disability awareness, including a discussion of medical versus social models of disability. The session was introduced by Professor Hilary Critchley and chaired by Professor Stephen Wigmore. The speakers for the event included - Julie Jebsen, Lecturer in Organisational Psychology at the University of Manchester, on her work research on gender equality in STEM careers.Debora Kayembe, University Rector and human rights lawyer and activist, on tackling racism in academia.
