The Clinical Skills Centre at Edinburgh Medical School provides a professional, supportive and innovative learning environment for the development of clinical skills, professional confidence and collaborative practice.

The Centre supports a broad range of educational activities, offering learners the opportunity to develop, practise and refine their skills in a safe, structured and realistic simulated clinical environment. While primarily supporting undergraduate medical education, the Centre also welcomes healthcare professionals and colleagues from across the multidisciplinary workforce for a wide range of interprofessional training and development opportunities.

Our purpose-built facilities combine specialist simulation equipment and immersive learning technologies to deliver engaging, practical and realistic educational experiences. Learners are encouraged to develop their clinical competence, strengthen decision-making and communication skills, and work collaboratively in preparation for clinical practice.

Our Facilities

The Centre offers a range of specialist facilities designed to support high-quality clinical and simulation-based education, including:

• Four-bedded simulated ward equipped with SMOTS™ camera technology, enabling observation, reflection and structured feedback.
• Five-bedded simulated ward featuring SMOTS™ camera technology and a SMART board to facilitate interactive teaching and collaborative learning.
• Four mid-fidelity manikins with clinical monitoring equipment, supporting the development and application of essential clinical skills.
• Dedicated simulation room featuring SimMan® and SMOTS™ technology to deliver realistic, immersive clinical scenarios.
• Harvey® cardiopulmonary patient simulator, providing practical opportunities to develop cardiovascular examination and assessment skills.
• Immersive Simulation Room featuring Samsung immersive technology to enhance experiential learning and create engaging, realistic clinical scenarios.
• Dedicated teaching rooms providing flexible spaces for group teaching, discussion, practical skills development and collaborative learning.

Supporting Clinical Excellence Through Education

Whether learners are developing foundational clinical skills, consolidating existing knowledge or participating in multidisciplinary training, the Clinical Skills Centre provides an environment that promotes confidence, competence and continuous professional development.

Through practical experience, simulation-based learning and collaborative teaching, we aim to prepare learners for the challenges of clinical practice and support the delivery of safe, effective and compassionate patient care.
