About

An introduction to our institute.

About us

Our institute fosters collaborative neuroscience, cardiovascular, metabolic and psychiatric research to tackle the world's most significant health challenges.

Our research explores health and disease across the body and life course - from tiny changes in cells to the lived experiences of patients. By combining advanced technologies with cross-disciplinary teamwork, we strive to improve how illnesses are understood, diagnosed, treated and prevented.

Whether you’re a member of the public, a student, a researcher, or a potential partner or funder, we invite you to explore our work on the Research page.

Our locations

We currently operate across three main Edinburgh sites: BioQuarter, George Square and the Western General Hospital. By late 2026, most activities will consolidate at Edinburgh BioQuarter, occupying the refurbished Queen's Medical Research Institute (QMRI) and Chancellor's Building. The Clinical Research Facility will remain across several sites.

QMRI's ongoing refurbishments will create modern labs and collaborative spaces, supporting the BioQuarter’s transformation into Edinburgh’s Health Innovation District.
