After graduating from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in 1975, I trained as a GP in Edinburgh.

I then moved to the University of Western Ontario in Canada, where I completed a master’s degree in medical education.

In 1980,  I returned to the UK and shortly afterwards became a partner in a GP practice near Chelmsford in Essex.  During that time, I became involved in medical education and training and ultimately became Director of Postgraduate General Practice Education in London.

In March 2010, I returned to Edinburgh as Director of Postgraduate GP Education and Associate Postgraduate Dean in the South East Scotland Deanery.

From 2010, I became involved in the Clinical Education programme which is a joint initiative between the University of Edinburgh and NHS Education Scotland.  My role includes a strategic overview of the programme and its development., as well as a direct contribution to teaching on several courses.
