Times Higher Education rankings

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings include more than 1,600 universities across 99 countries and territories.

  • The University of Edinburgh is ranked joint 30th in the world in the 2024 THE World University Rankings.

  • We’re ranked in the top 30 universities in the world for:

    • life sciences subjects (28th).
    • clinical and health subjects (23rd).

QS rankings

The QS World University Rankings cover more than 1,400 universities around the world, analysed through the lens of research impact, academic standing, internationalisation, student/staff ratio, graduate employability and teaching capacity.

  • The University of Edinburgh is ranked 27th in the world in the 2025 QS World University Rankings.
  • This places the University in the top 2% of higher education institutions worldwide.

QS also publishes subject-level rankings covering five subject areas that are further divided into 54 disciplines.

  • We’re ranked in the top 30 universities in the world for the overall subject area of life sciences and medicine.
  • We’re also ranked:
    • 9th in the world for veterinary science.
    • Joint 19th in the world for anatomy and physiology.
    • 22nd in the world for medicine.

ShanghaiRanking

The ShanghaiRanking is published annually by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. Their Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) assesses more than 2,500 universities, and the best 1,000 are published. The University of Edinburgh is ranked 5th in the UK and 38th in the world in the 2023 ARWU.

ShanghaiRanking also publishes an annual Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, which ranks institutions in 55 subjects across Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences. In the 2023-24 edition, the University of Edinburgh is ranked in the top 50 universities in the world for 13 subjects, including veterinary sciences, human biological sciences, clinical medicine and public health.

US News Global Universities

The overall Global Universities rankings published by US News encompass the top 1,250 universities spread across 74 countries.

The University of Edinburgh is ranked 34th overall in the 2022-2023 edition.

The Guardian's best UK universities 2024 rankings

The Guardian newspaper ranks UK higher education institutions by subject, looking at student satisfaction, staff numbers, spending and career prospects.

In the 2024 rankings, the University of Edinburgh is ranked 2nd in the UK for veterinary science, 5th in the UK for medicine and 4th in the UK for biomedical science.
