Medical School receives glowing report

Edinburgh Medical School has been praised in the General Medical Council’s national review of medical education and training in Scotland.

The General Medical Council (GMC) found that staff and students were well supported and the School has a compassionate culture providing an exceptional standard of care for patients and their families.

Clinical training

A scheme that pairs medical students with trainee junior doctors to help their clinical learning was highlighted as an area that is working particularly well.

The report also praised the medical school’s relationship with NHS Lothian in the training of new doctors.

Professional development

A professional development programme for clinical teaching staff that has improved standards of medical teaching was also commended.

We are delighted to receive such positive feedback from the GMC, which is testament to the dedication and professionalism of our students and staff.

Response to feedback

The GMC recognised the School’s efforts to respond to student feedback and implement changes.

Moving final exams from June to February was highlighted as a way in which the School had responded to student concerns, helping to alleviate pressures associated with revising whilst completing clinical practice. They also recommended that the school continued its plans to improve and standardise assessment across the programme.

Widening participation

Efforts to encourage people from diverse backgrounds to apply for medical school training were also recognised.

The report is part of the GMC’s remit to ensure that all medical schools comply with its standards and that there are adequate quality management processes in place.

It is produced following meetings with senior management and students, as well as an online student survey.
