This talk will give an overview of the practice of forensic pathology in the UK with particular focus on the practice in Scotland. It will include details on training, daily practice, an overview of the medicolegal framework and illustrations from the author’s practice. Veterinary and Comparative Pathology Seminar Series Thursday 4th August 2011 Time: 4.00pm-5.00pm Venue: Seminar Room B.006, Roslin Institute, Easter Bush Campus Speaker: Dr. Ralph BouHaidar, BSc MSc MD FRCPath FMFLM Forensic Medicine Unit, Edinburgh Following his BSc in Chemistry from the American University of Beirut, Ralph completed his medical training in Russia where he was first exposed to Forensic Pathology and performed many autopsies in Kursk City Mortuary. In September 2000, he joined the department of Forensic Medicine in Glasgow where he completed his Masters degree. He then started his pathology training in Newcastle where he spent 2 years, then joined Leicester in 2003, having been offered one of the Home Office training posts. During his training period in Leicester, he attended various mortuaries in the East Midlands as well as mortuaries in Oxford, London and the Falkland Islands. Ralph became a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists in 2009 and joined the Forensic Medicine Unit in Edinburgh as a consultant forensic pathologist for NHS Lothian and an honorary senior lecturer for the University of Edinburgh. As part of his routine wok Ralph is involved in examining a variety of cases including sudden, unnatural and suspicious deaths and provides support to the Procurator Fiscal and Police. Ralph is actively involved in training histopathologists and forensic pathologists as well as providing teaching to medical students. He has a major involvement in CBRN cases in the UK.
