Inaugural lecture: The fish school of life - learning to mend the spinal cord Injury to the brain or spinal cord are not repaired and leave permanent deficits, for example paralysis. In contrast, fishes and salamanders recover function after such injuries. This begs the question as to how these vertebrates overcome obstacles to successful regeneration that mammals, including humans, cannot. The zebrafish, in particular, can teach us how to replenish lost nerve cells and rewire the connections from the brain to spinal cord and muscle. In these transparent fish, we can directly observe and understand repair processes. In her inaugural lecture,Catherina Becker will show what happens in the brains and spinal cords of zebrafish that allows them to repair even fully paralysing injuries.
