MD-PhD student. Name: Michael Bryan Category: Current studentRole: MD-PhD studentTime active with Edinburgh Medical School: Expected to graduate 2030 After a stint as a police officer with London’s Metropolitan Police, Michael began his medical career as a student in Edinburgh. Originally studying to become a surgeon, he soon recognised that behind so many surgical cases lay a common enemy: cancer. It was this that redirected his focus from the operating theatre and towards the science that might prevent the need for surgery altogether. Michael was awarded a year-long pre-doctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School, where he discovered that head and neck cancers could be detected in the blood up to a decade before they become clinically apparent, opening the door to new models of screening and prevention. He interrupted his clinical years to complete a DPhil at the University of Oxford, where he is currently designing personalised cancer vaccines. Michael has remained connected to Edinburgh Medical School, volunteering with the NIHR RIGHT4 global health programme. His work on acute poisoning in low- and middle-income countries contributes directly to the development of life-saving interventions in communities that need them most. His contributions strengthen research that will save lives across the world. Michael’s integrity and compassion was noted by colleagues, who said, "he shows what can be achieved when resilience, service, and scientific ambition come together in one person.
