John was a trailblazing alumnus of Edinburgh Medical School, having graduated in 1899 after winning a scholarship to study medicine. Originally from Trinidad, John went on to make significant contributions to the medical field, working in hospitals and joining committees dedicated to preventing diseases such as tuberculosis and syphilis.

He was also a key figure in the Pan-African movement, attending the first Pan-African conference and later becoming the second president of the African Progress Union in 1921.

Despite facing discrimination throughout his career, including being rejected from the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War I, John persevered and continued to aid the war efforts by volunteering with the British Red Cross. His remarkable story of fortitude and dedication in the face of racism is an inspiration to many.
