A former lawyer, Bruce was diagnosed with a rare form of motor neuron disease (MND) in 2014. He is an active patient advocate, making valuable contributions to many MND-related organisations and research studies, in Scotland, the UK and internationally.

Bruce is most proud of his contributions through the Euan MacDonald Centre for MND Research. He is an inspirational member of the patient advisory group for the drugs trial MND-SMART, supporting co-production of the largest academic trial for people living with MND every step of the way.

Bruce has also made contributions to University of Edinburgh spin-out company SpeakUnique. SpeakUnique creates bespoke voices for people who have lost their own through disease or trauma and is now developing speech-based health monitoring tools.

Bruce is also a member of the Patients & Carers Advisory Council in The International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations.
