Charlie Gourley is a researcher and professor of medical oncology. Originally from Fife, he has led research into ovarian cancer in Edinburgh for over 20 years. His career has focused on three main areas: improving outcomes for women with cancer; enabling Edinburgh Medical School to be a leading centre in the world of cancer research; and training the next generation of cancer research leaders.

Charlie has played a central role in clinical trials, significantly enhancing survival rates for ovarian cancer patients globally. 

His efforts to unify cancer research across Scotland resulted in the formation of the Cancer Research UK Scotland Centre. This initiative has significantly boosted the speed at which scientific discoveries are translated into clinical practices that benefit cancer patients throughout Scotland.

Charlie is deeply invested in education and leads the Trametinib and Retain Academic Cancer Clinicians Plus (TRACC+) PhD scheme, mentoring emerging leaders in cancer research. His work has earned him international recognition, with more than 170 journal publications and prominent roles in major cancer research organizations globally.

Through his leadership, research, and mentorship, Charlie has made enduring contributions to the medical community, particularly in the field of oncology, making Edinburgh a focal point of cancer research excellence.
