Headshot of David Fitzpatrick

David Fitzpatrick studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and, after graduating in 1984, trained in paediatrics in Edinburgh, Bristol, Glasgow and the US.

David has worked as a consultant in paediatric genetics in Edinburgh since 1994. His research into genetic causes of severe developmental disorders in children has led to real-world benefits to NHS diagnostic services and the lives of the affected families.

During his time at the University of Edinburgh, he has taught clinical genetics to undergraduate and postgraduate medical students. He has also worked as a group leader at the MRC Human Genetics Unit.

“It was an amazing and slightly overwhelming experience to become a student at the Edinburgh Medical School in 1979 after life as a pupil in a comprehensive school in the central belt of Scotland. It is one that I will be forever grateful for. It allowed me to achieve things that I could never have imagined I would be able to do. I hope that the opportunities I was granted are still be available to all.”
