A key figure in the Scottish Enlightenment, William was a professor at Edinburgh Medical School, president of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (1773–1775) and first physician to the king in Scotland (1773–1790).
 
William was a beloved teacher and also a writer, with many of his students becoming significant contributors to the development of modern medicine. He also wrote a number of groundbreaking medical textbooks, the best known of which was First Lines of the Practice of Physic, published in several volumes between 1777 and 1784. 
 
William is also credited with inventing the basis of modern refrigeration.
