Portrait of Jim Flett Wilson

Jim is a professor and geneticist at the University of Edinburgh, specialising in population genetics of the British Isles.

He leads the Viking Genes studies, which analyse genetic information from over 10,000 volunteers from Orkney, Shetland and the Hebrides.

The studies, some of which began nearly 25 years ago, have furthered understanding of the population history of Scotland, identifying disease risk and preventative medicine opportunities in isolated populations.

More recently, Jim’s work has pioneered the ethical sharing of “actionable” genetic findings with study participants, a first for Scotland. His work has identified genes linked to breast, ovarian and prostate cancer, as well as cardiac conditions. As a result, Jim’s work has led to more regular check-ups, early treatment or preventative surgeries for many individuals in these communities.

Colleagues recognise Jim’s scientific integrity and curiosity, as well as his enthusiasm and mentorship of early career researchers.
