As an avid lover of languages and a former occupational psychologist turned critical reader, Robert’s contributions to Edinburgh Medical School (EMS), have brought a wealth of perspective characterised by a unique blend of professional insight and personal wisdom.

In his seventh decade, he navigates the challenges and misconceptions of living with a degenerative condition, demonstrating that limitations can lie more in perception than in reality.

Robert is noted for his influence in redesigning hospital apparel, ensuring that attire aptly reflects the professional roles so that patients know who they are dealing with. His involvement with the Edinburgh Compassion Salon as a committee member and his participation in various service user groups underscores his commitment to enriching student experiences and advising on compassionate practices in healthcare.

Featured in "Unknown Hand," a documentary by Saul Pankhurst, his story continues to inspire a re-humanisation within medical settings. As both an advisor and co-creator, he has helped shape how medical professionals approach patient interaction, by ensuring compassion is at the forefront of medical education and practice.
