Headshot of Richard Anderson

Richard is a professor at the University of Edinburgh and a leader in the field of reproductive health. His work spans areas such as fertility preservation and contraceptive development.

Originally from Shropshire, Richard first came to Edinburgh as a medical student in 1979. He has remained in Edinburgh ever since, and is now a professor.

In 2017, in a UK first, he successfully performed a transplant of frozen ovary tissue into a woman recovering from cancer, allowing her to give birth.

He is currently working on a clinical trial exploring male contraception. He also provides a specialist endocrinology service to the Edinburgh Gender Identity Clinic.

Colleagues describe Richard as an advocate for people who are marginalised in medical research. He challenges students to think beyond the lab, to become compassionate and socially accountable researchers.
