Head shot of Andrew

Andrew was the son of a doctor and graduated in medicine from the University of Aberdeen.

He was the co-discoverer of apoptotic cell death and is widely recognised as the 'Father of Apoptosis'. He was an academic pathologist in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Cambridge, performing most of his research work on apoptosis whilst at the University of Edinburgh between 1972 and 1998.

His landmark discoveries changed the scientific establishment’s understanding of how cells die in health and disease, although it took time for the scientific establishment to fully appreciate its fundamental importance. His research into cancer has had critical implications for understanding tumour suppression and cancer therapy.
