He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his wartime service and, on his return to Edinburgh in 1946, founded the combined medical and surgical gastrointestinal unit at the Western General Hospital. He was appointed to the Regius Chair of Clinical Surgery at the University in 1956 and became an international figure fostering links with the United States, Canada and the Commonwealth.
