Helen Falconer is the exemplification of the idea that everyone has a part to play in the research and discoveries of science. Despite having no formal training or qualifications in biology or biomedical science, Helen is considered by many as the “unsung hero” and “arguably the most important member” of Professor William Wood"s Lab at the Institute for Regeneration and Repair (IRR). She gained these accolades by doing one simple but profound thing, making the food for the lab’s model organisms. Flies.

This work isn’t flashy, it doesn’t require fancy microscopes or precise chemical reactions; it is easy to forget or overlook. However, without Helen’s consistent, diligent, and dedicated efforts, Wood’s internationally recognised lab would find itself unable to continue its research. Helen makes sure research can continue, post-doctorate or PhD students can learn, and breakthroughs can be discovered.

When told about her nomination, she stated she didn’t want “any of that nonsense”. Having since agreed, she still continues to graft away, keeping innovation on track and making sure not a single fly goes hungry in the meantime.
