Joanna is a world-leading researcher in stroke, cerebral small vessel disease and brain ageing. A graduate of Edinburgh Medical School, she has worked in the city for much of her career.
 
She was founding director of the Scottish Brain Research Imaging Centre (1998-2019) and subsequently Edinburgh Imaging. She also founded the Scottish Imaging Network: A Platform for Scientific Excellence, putting Scottish imaging research on the world stage. 
 
She continues to practise medicine as an honorary consultant neuroradiologist with NHS Lothian. In 2016, she was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to medicine and neuroscience.
 
Colleagues consider her a supportive mentor, a pioneering scientist and an inspiring leader.
