The women of Edinburgh Medical School

2026 will see the University of Edinburgh mark the contributions of ‘300 faces’ who have all been nominated by means of an open call to staff, students and alumni. The aim of this project was to steer away from the more celebrated and well-known faces and stories, and use the tercentenary year to highlight some of the lesser-known stories and contributors.

In this public talk, Professor Lorna Marson, chair of the Edinburgh Medical School 300 Steering Group, as well as alumna, Lesley Dawson and final year medical student, Heen Shamaz will place a spotlight on some of the women among the 300 faces, and explain why their stories have enduring relevance to modern medical practice.

This public lecture will be held in the lecture theatre within Old College where medical teaching took place before the move to Lauriston Place in the later 19th century - a space from which women were excluded for the entirety of its time as part of the medical school. Holding the lecture there will have particular resonance in terms of the transformation of the role and status of women in medicine over the last century.
