Margaret was a medical doctor whose career spanned war-time training and decades of work in general practice. She graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1944 during the Second World War, a time when women in medicine often faced barriers, including being taught separately from male students.

During her studies, she gained practical experience by volunteering to deliver babies in deprived areas of Edinburgh, including the Cowgate. She also studied subjects such as medical botany, reflecting the broad training of the time.

After graduating, Margaret worked as a general practitioner in London until her retirement. She was also a member of the Balint Society, which supported doctors in understanding the psychological needs of their patients and improving doctor–patient relationships.

Her influence extended beyond her own career, inspiring family members to enter healthcare professions, including medicine and midwifery. She maintained strong ties to Edinburgh throughout her life.

Margaret’s career reflects dedication to patient care across many years, as well as the experiences of women training in medicine during a period of social and global change.
