Keith is Emeritus Professor of Cardiology at the University of Edinburgh and British Heart Foundation. He was born in Zimbabwe, and after education there and in Malawi, travelled to Edinburgh to join Edinburgh Medical School. He then spent nearly five years in the US before returning to the UK.

He was appointed to the Duke of Edinburgh Professor of Cardiology, has served as Head of the Division of Medical and Radiological Sciences of the University of Edinburgh and Chair, then President, of ASH (Action on Smoking and Health, Scotland). He was also President of the British Cardiovascular Society and President and Chair of the Scientific Programme of the European Society of Cardiology.

Keith’s research interests have involved the mechanisms and manifestations of acute coronary arterial disease and thrombosis. His key scientific discovery, with others, was the development of t-PA (the major clot buster for heart attack and stroke) while in Washington University, St Louis. The treatment is widely used today.

Keith was honoured by the American College of Cardiology as one of four "Legends in Cardiology" in 2015 and similarly by the European Society of Cardiology in 2015.

He helped to develop the Cardiovascular Research Centre, now a leading cardiovascular research centre in the UK.
