Nairn Wilson is a leading figure in the field of dentistry, with a career marked by academic and professional milestones. Born in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, and educated at Strathallan School in Perth, he completed his Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree in 1973 from the University of Edinburgh and then became a lecturer at the University. He later moved to the University of Manchester as a lecturer, and subsequently held the position of Dean of Manchester Dental School and Pro-Vice Chancellor.


Nairn's career continued at King's College London, where he was Professor of Restorative Dentistry. He has also served as the President of the General Dental Council and Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. His efforts were instrumental in establishing and promoting the Edinburgh Dental Institute.


In recognition of his contributions to dentistry and dental education, Nairn was knighted in 2023, making him one of the few dental professionals to receive such an honour for services to the field. He has been a staunch advocate for the University of Edinburgh throughout his career, and in retirement in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, he continues to influence the field through initiatives like the Nairn Wilson Medal for dental postgraduate studies.
