After leaving school in Birkenhead, Derek began his career with the Inland Revenue before studying sociology as a mature student at the University of York. He then trained as an occupational therapist and worked in the NHS for several years, gaining practical clinical experience. From 1993 onwards, Derek moved into higher education, where he taught health and social care professionals at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels until his retirement.His PhD focused on chronic pain and health professions education, and he later contributed to research on pain in older people. Between 2015 and 2022, Derek worked at Edinburgh Medical School as Programme Director for the PhD in Clinical Education and Academic Coordinator for the MSc in Clinical Education. He brought together his social science training, clinical insight, and teaching experience in this role. Derek is remembered as a supportive mentor and compassionate leader who had a strong influence on his students.
