Richard Skipworth

Richard Skipworth is an honorary professor of surgery, an NHS research clinician and a consultant and surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

He graduated from Edinburgh Medical School with an MBChB in 2000. From 2004-2007 he was a clinical research fellow in Edinburgh Medical School, graduating with a doctorate of medicine in 2011. In 2014, he was awarded a consultant surgeon post at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Richard’s research interests include cancer cachexia (the wasting syndrome associated with cancer) and surgical sabermetrics. He supervises several PhD and MD students and is involved with the delivery of online university courses through Edinburgh Surgery Online.

Richard is proud to have been involved with Edinburgh Medical School for over 30 years throughout all of his medical, scientific and postgraduate training. He is pleased to be able to teach and support trainees within the same medical school that taught and supported him.

Richard’s students recall his tireless efforts to impart his skills and knowledge to undergraduate and postgraduate students and his instrumental role in bringing the Cancer Cachexia Society Conference to Edinburgh in September 2023.
