Mathew is a clinical lecturer in anaesthesia who combines teaching, research, and patient care to improve outcomes in modern medicine.

Since joining Edinburgh Medical School, he has supported students through academic teaching and practical experience, helping them engage with complex topics and develop critical thinking skills. He is known for being approachable and for encouraging students to take part in research and clinical learning beyond the classroom.

Through his mentorship, students have contributed to research presentations at national conferences and achieved academic recognition, including major student awards. Mathew also involves students in journal clubs and clinical settings, helping them understand how research connects directly to patient care.

His research focuses on improving safety and outcomes in anaesthesia and perioperative medicine. His work includes projects on obstetric anaesthesia, such as improving the timing of epidurals and post-partum pain management, as well as national studies like CAVA UK, which examines variations in monitoring during anaesthesia. He is also involved in predictive modelling to support clinical decision-making.

Mathew’s work reflects a strong link between research and practice. By combining teaching with applied research, he contributes to training future clinicians while improving patient care in Edinburgh and beyond.
