Gordon Findlater

Gordon taught anatomy at the University of Edinburgh for 32 years and retired in 2016. He is now an emeritus professor and holds a PhD in neurophysiology.

Former medical students remember Gordon for his engaging anatomy teaching where he was known to use a huge array of colours of chalk to illustrate anatomical structures. His enthusiastic lectures turned subjects that are often seen as very technical into entertaining and relevant.

Following his retiral from the University, he was appointed Wade Professor of Surgical Anatomy for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2017.

Gordon has also been His Majesty’s Inspector of Anatomy for Scotland since 2017, a role responsible for regulating body donations and inspecting the anatomy departments of all five Scottish medical schools to ensure that they conform to the legal requirements of the Anatomy Act (Scotland).
