My path from clinical support worker to future doctor means I understand how teams with multiple skills give a person the best care. I love being part of a team, but seeing patients in critical care start to get better is the strongest motivation of all. J.C. Santos lived in the Philippines as a child but Scotland has been his home for more than 20 years. He completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Edinburgh in biological sciences before training as a nurse at Edinburgh Napier University, all the while working in clinical support roles within the NHS. J.C. is one of the first people to be part of the HCP-Med degree, designed for healthcare professionals to train as doctors. He is an ambassador for Edinburgh Medical School and in 2023 was elected representative to the Medical Students’ Council for the HCP-Med programme. His fellow students describe his kindness and support as student rep, helping them meet the demands of studying, working and caring for their families.
