Bill is a breast cancer researcher and clinician whose work has influenced modern drug treatments and research collaboration.

Coming from a working-class background in the north of England, he joined Edinburgh in 1969 and spent 35 years contributing to the Department of Clinical Surgery. He became a leading figure in studies of hormone therapies, including tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors, which remain widely used in breast cancer treatment. His work combined laboratory science with clinical practice, showing how research can directly improve patient care.

Bill also created the “Controversies in Breast Cancer” meetings, which brought together researchers from around the world to discuss and challenge current ideas, helping to move the field forward. Within the university, he took on leadership roles such as Postgraduate Convenor and was known for his focus on fairness and integrity.
