Thomas was an English doctor, health reformer and author who is probably best remembered for his Code of Medical Ethics, which was published in 1803, and remains an influential text to this day.

Born in Lancashire in 1740, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh in the 1760s, before doing further postgraduate study at Leyden University in Holland.

Thomas was based in Manchester for most of his professional life. He was a member of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society, of which he was a founder member and served as president during 1782-1804.
