Head shot of Dorothy

Dorothy made an invaluable contribution to the Edinburgh Medical School by donating her body in 2019 for use as a "silent teacher" in the anatomy department.

This selfless act is essential for medical education, as it allows students to learn human anatomy through direct observation and dissection - an approach considered foundational in medical training. Recognising the sensitivity around using images of donors, Dorothy's family has kindly consented for her image to represent all individuals who have made similar contributions over the past 300 years.

These donors, coming from various backgrounds, collectively support the advancement of medical knowledge by allowing their bodies to be used for scientific study after their death. This generosity underlines a profound commitment to education and the improvement of healthcare for future generations.

By acknowledging Dorothy and others like her, we recognise the profound impact and lasting legacy their gifts create in the medical field.
