Moira Whyte

Moira Whyte is Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. Moira qualified in medicine at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College in 1984 before training in respiratory medicine at the Hammersmith Hospital/Royal Postgraduate Medical School. 

Moira was appointed Chair in Respiratory Medicine at the University of Sheffield and directed a research group undertaking research interests in chronic respiratory diseases, acute lung injury and mechanisms of inflammation. 

In 2014 Moira moved to the University of Edinburgh where she became the Sir John Crofton Professor of Respiratory Medicine and Director of the MRC/University of Edinburgh Centre for Inflammation Research. In 2016 Moira became Head of Edinburgh Medical School and in 2018, the Head of the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, becoming the first woman to be appointed in this role.

Moira has a longstanding interest in developing clinical academic careers and was for 5 years Chair of the MRC Training and Careers Group and a member of MRC Strategy Board. She also chaired Unit of Assessmen1 (Clinical Medicine) for the UK’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021.

Moira was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire for her services to respiratory medicine in the 2014 New Year Honours and a Dame Commander of the same order in the 2024 Birthday Honours.
