Moira was the Vice-Principal and first female Head of the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine in Edinburgh from 2018 to 2023.

She was previously Director of the University of Edinburgh Centre for Inflammation Research and Head of Edinburgh Medical School. She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire for her services to respiratory medicine in the 2014 New Year Honours and a Dame Commander of the same order in the 2024 Birthday Honours.

Moira’s research is into mechanisms of resolution of airway inflammation and regulation of immune cell death. Her research has defined mechanisms underpinning the persistence of neutrophils in tissues and how they contribute to tissue injury and chronic inflammatory lunch diseases. A particular interest is the career development of junior academics, both clinical and non-clinical.
