Current student and MB-PhD graduate. Name: Mairi Treanor-TaylorCategory: Current studentRole: Current student and MB-PhD graduate Mairi made history at Edinburgh Medical School as the first person to complete its MB-PhD programme, which combines full medical training with a research doctorate, graduating in 2024. Her PhD, undertaken with Cancer Research UK's TRACC programme, focused on cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma – a form of skin cancer responsible for around one quarter of all skin cancer deaths. Using bioinformatics alongside laboratory-based methods, she investigated the genetic mutations that drive the cancer to spread, with the aim of identifying new targets for treatment. Since completing her PhD, Mairi has become an active advocate for the MB-PhD route, mentoring students from both Edinburgh and Glasgow who are considering the programme. She also taught on the Year 2 MBChB research module throughout her PhD, helping to encourage a research-oriented mindset in fellow medical students.
