Professor of Transplant Surgery and Dean of Clinical Medicine. Name: Lorna MarsonCategory: StaffRole: Professor of Transplant Surgery and Dean of Clinical MedicineTime active with Edinburgh Medical School: When I entered surgical training, there were very few women. I had to find my own way: it was challenging but exciting. I want to make sure that anyone who wants to be a surgeon is helped to achieve that goal, whoever they are. If I can be a role model for other women in surgery, that is a huge privilege. Lorna Marson began her surgical career in London before training as a kidney and pancreas transplant surgeon in Edinburgh. In 2017, she was elected as the first female president of the British Transplantation Society. In 2019, she was appointed co-director of the UK Organ Donation and Transplantation Research Network. Lorna is as at home in the operating theatre as she is in the boardroom or at the lab bench. Earlier in her career, she held a Clinical Scientist Award from the Academy of Medical Sciences/Health Foundation that funded her research to take an idea from the lab all the way to use in patients undergoing surgery. Lorna’s leadership roles at the University enable her to support students and staff at every career stage and to influence training programmes for clinical researchers – the people who work as both doctors and scientists.
