Name: Leslie James Park-DuncanCategory: AlumniRole: Diabetologist Time active with Edinburgh Medical School: Graduated 1951 Leslie was a diabetologist who built a leading diabetes service at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and trained a generation of specialists.He first first qualified in veterinary medicine and served in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps from 1944 to 1946, overseeing mule transport for Allied forces in Italy. He later studied medicine, graduating with honours in 1951, and was awarded a Rockefeller scholarship to the United States, where he trained in Cleveland. On returning to Edinburgh, he became a lecturer in therapeutics before being appointed consultant in charge of the diabetic and dietetic department in 1962, a role he held until 1987.Leslie developed the department into an internationally recognised centre. Doctors from across the UK and overseas trained under him, and he encouraged research in areas such as autoimmunity, diabetic complications, pregnancy, and new treatments. His early work included studies on the intravenous glucose tolerance test.He introduced practical innovations in patient care, including education on insulin use, eye screening, and foot care. Known for his direct and sometimes unconventional teaching style, he built strong relationships with both patients and trainees.Outside medicine, Leslie enjoyed rugby, golf and show jumping.
