Head shot of Jonathan Rees

Jonathan is an emeritus professor at the University of Edinburgh. He held the Grant Chair of Dermatology in Edinburgh from 2000 to 2020, and before that the Chair of Dermatology in Newcastle from 1992 to 1999. He trained in dermatology and clinical science in Newcastle, Vienna and Strasbourg.

As a researcher, much of Jonathan’s work has focussed on skin cancer and the effects of ultraviolet radiation on skin. His research covers many domains including skin syndrome gene identification; skin cancer genetics, the identification of the gene for red hair and sun sensitivity; and work on semi-automated skin cancer diagnostic support systems.

As a teacher, Jonathan completely reorganised the teaching of undergraduate dermatology to medical students in Edinburgh, the new format receiving high praise from both students and clinicians. He produced what is still the leading open access online atlas and teaching resource on skin cancer aimed at medical and healthcare students. Although he retired in 2020, he continues to teach skin biology to first year MBChB students.

Colleagues recall the passion and humour with which he taught at Edinburgh Medical School and the consistent praise received from students on his outstanding teaching methods.
