He graduated from Edinburgh Medical School in 1988 and trained in medicine, anaesthesia and critical care when it was still an emerging specialty.Timothy is a leading expert in critical care medicine. In 1999 he was appointed as an NHS consultant in Edinburgh and practiced anaesthesia and critical care, with a specific interest in liver transplantation anaesthesia. In 2007, Timothy was appointed as an honorary professor at the University of Edinburgh, and in 2011 took up the first Chair of Critical Care in the University.Timothy has built a successful academic department, including clinical scientists and research-active NHS clinicians focusing on 'bench to bedside' research. He has also led the development of undergraduate and masters degrees in anaesthesia, critical care, and pain medicine.Timothy’s research focusses on transfusion medicine, ICU sedation and delirium, and recovery from critical illness. He has led many large trials and observational studies that have generated evidence that has changed practice and improved patient care. Timothy is proud to be the very first professor of critical care in the University's history, and of his work in establishing Edinburgh as a leading centre for critical care research, and improving the care of critically ill patients through his research on anaemia and blood transfusions.
