Marije is a paediatric intensivist and medical educator whose work focuses on improving how healthcare professionals are trained in clinical settings. She trained at the Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital, University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands, and after completing her paediatric intensive care fellowship in 2006, she remained there as a member of staff. In 2013, Marije completed a PhD in translational research, building a strong foundation in both clinical care and research.
 

With a growing interest in education, Marije pursued a Master of Clinical Education at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with distinction in 2020. This marked a shift in her career towards health professions education. In 2017, she became programme director of the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU), and in 2020 she led the national development and implementation of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) for Dutch PICU fellows.

Marije’s current work focuses on workplace-based teaching and learning, with a particular interest in EPAs. She leads an international EPA course and has established her own health professions education research group. She has supervised several master’s students to successful completion and currently supervises PhD candidates. Marije also remains involved with the University of Edinburgh, supporting students and contributing to teaching, and is known for her thoughtful and supportive approach.
