Meher AD Naoroji

Meher AD Naoroji was the first Indian woman to graduate with a medical degree from the University of Edinburgh in 1906.

Her educational journey began with her matriculation in Bombay in 1898, leading to her registration at the University of Edinburgh in 1901.

She graduated in 1906 with degrees in Medicine (MB) and Surgery (ChB), marking a significant milestone as previous female students from India had only attained professional certificates rather than full medical degrees.

Upon returning to India, she initially worked in Karachi and later managed the state hospital in Bhuj in the Kutch district.

Her career in Kutch was characterised by a deep commitment to healthcare, particularly focusing on female patients in the region.

Edinburgh Medical School was pivotal in Meher's life, providing her with the credentials and expertise to break barriers in the medical profession in India as one of the first few qualified Indian women doctors.
