I make it a priority to meet every one of our first year students. I’m alongside them in the lab when they start to learn about human anatomy. It can be an emotional experience and people react differently. I’m there to help make their learning positive and memorable.

Alethea Kelsey is an anatomy lecturer at the University of Edinburgh.

She joined the University as a mature student where she completed an undergraduate degree in medical sciences and then a postgraduate MSc in human anatomy before becoming an anatomy lecturer herself. As course organiser, she now plans the anatomy and pathology class she once attended.

In 2020, Alethea took part in a reimagining of the 1632 Rembrandt painting The Anatomy Lesson of Nicolaes Tulp to commemorate the Edinburgh Seven, the first women to matriculate at a British university.

150 years after the Edinburgh Seven were prevented from graduating, Alethea and seven students created a new version of the painting with photographer Laurence Winram. Today, the image hangs in the medical student common room.

Alethea’s students describe her as “an incredible teacher” who welcomes them with warmth and creates an inspirational place to learn.
