Ashley Simpson is a former student of Edinburgh Medical School and currently works with NHS Lothian Medical Education Directorate. She also works with NHS Fife, as a senior registrar in renal medicine.

Ashley is from Edinburgh, the first in her family to attend university and now the holder of four degrees from the University of Edinburgh.

Ashley is proud to have contributed to equality, diversity and inclusion within Edinburgh Medical School and the wider NHS Lothian community. Her contributions include advancing research into structural inequalities in medical education, focusing on the experiences of students from under-represented backgrounds; leading the development of an undergraduate scholarship programme to promote equitable, career-enhancing opportunities for widening participation students; and working with faculty and students to create more supportive and inclusive learning environments.

Ashley’s students recall her commitment to providing focused bedside teaching, especially during the Covid 19 pandemic where medical students received less exposure to clinical specialities and more teaching was delivered online.

One student said: “Dr Simpson has had a profound impact on my medical career and I will always be grateful and aim to provide the same opportunities for junior trainees and medical students I encounter in my own career.”
