Jon Stone

Jon is a neurologist who specialises in functional neurological disorders (FND), working at the overlap of neurology and psychiatry. He is known internationally for improving understanding, diagnosis and treatment of FND among patients and clinicians.

As a student, Jon was remembered as outstanding yet modest. “He was a brilliant student who achieved distinctions with little effort but was always humble, self‑effacing and amusing,” recalls his nominator. Unsure at first whether to choose psychiatry or neurology, he chose neurology and built a career that bridges both fields. His public talks and online resources explain FND in clear, compassionate language. They provide practical guidance on assessment and treatment, reduce stigma, and help people and their families accept and move forward with a diagnosis.

Jon’s career is closely linked to Edinburgh Medical School and the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Through his clinical and academic roles, he contributes to teaching, service improvement and research, ensuring that current knowledge about FND reaches students, trainees, clinicians and the wider community. His work has supported better joined‑up care across neurology and mental health in Scotland and beyond.
