Following graduation from Loughborough in 1976, she went on to study towards a PhD in the Department of Human Morphology in the Medical School of the University of Nottingham.On successful completion of her PhD in 1980, Fanney moved to Manchester where she was appointed lecturer in anatomy and taught there until September 1988. After successfully obtaining a lectureship in the Department of Anatomy at the University of Edinburgh, Fanney was appointed senior lecturer in 1997 and taught there until her retirement in 2021.In addition to her role as a lecturer in anatomy, Fanney was also Dean of Student Support in the Faculty of Medicine. Fanney is credited by many Edinburgh Medical School graduates as providing the guidance, support and wisdom during their studies that made it possible for them to be where they are today.
