After graduating from Edinburgh Medical School, Murray balanced an outstanding surgical career with philanthropy that continues to open doors for students. He became a prominent paediatric and general surgeon in the United States and remained deeply committed to giving back to the community.

With his wife, Hanna, Murray directed more than $1.5 million to support Edinburgh medical students. Before his death in 1998, he asked that a gift left in his will be used to further benefit the school. The Dr and Mrs Murray McCallum Bett Travelling Scholars Fund helps reduce financial barriers and, in line with widening participation, prioritise students who might otherwise miss out.

As one fifth‑year WP student reflected, the award made a six‑week placement in Tanzania possible and “life‑changing”, exemplifying Murray’s enduring legacy at Edinburgh.
